Course Overview
| The guitar making and repair course consistes of practical and theoretical training in acoustic and electric guitar construction and repair. The is 5 months in duration with 880 hours of training. Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The first two months will be dedicated to learning about the manufacturing processes, tools, tooling and machinery. This in turn will prepare you for the actual 'hands-on' creation of your own instrument. During this period you will also be trained on basic and major repairs on acoustic and electric guitars. During the remaining three months students will be involved in every phase of building one guitar of their choice (electric, acoustic or bass). A complete handbook of guitar construction will be compiled during the five month period. Once completed, you will have a working knowledge of : Major Repairs Removal of old finishes ~ Resanding ~ Dressing / installing frets / removal of neck and reset ~ Set ups ~ Finishes and spraying ~ Cutting and installing pearl inlay ~ adhering and installing bridges and nuts ~ Repair broken headstock and wood cracks.
Design ~ Choosing and cutting woods ~ Assembling and gluing wings, body and neck ~ Fingerboard cutting / fretwork ~ Sanding ~ Finishes and Spraying ~ Sealer, wet sanding and lacquer ~ Buffing ~ Electronics ~ Assembly. Acoustic (Construction) Bending sides ~ Bracing ~ Jointing tops and backs ~ Moulding andsanding ~ Fretwork ~ Binding installation ~ Resaw wood ~ Working on overhead and small hand routers. |
